Viajar con nuevos amigos! Part 4: Real fishermen, La Paz city life and hot springs

It took one and a half hour to get back on Highway one and we had to cross valley about 360 km to La Paz. We decided to stay one night in Puerto Chale at nearly the middle of the way. It was a typical little Mexican fisher village with no stores situated at a bay. The locals showed us a place for free camping, but we didn’t feel comfortable getting there with our van on the loam soil. Nothing happened, so we placed our camp next to the bay and shared the place with hundreds of birds and pelicans.

The fishermen gave Willi a bag full with fresh Katharina Clams, which were a delicious snack until Roberto prepared the fish from the day before for dinner. After a few beers we went to bed early. Next morning when we wanted to leave, we got stuck in the mud. It was impossible to get out without help. Daniela went to the town and asked for help. A guy came along with his truck and a rope. He was wondering the day before that we didn’t get stuck yesterday and pulled us out of the mud. Many thanks!

At late afternoon we arrived in La Paz and Daniela and Roberto showed us a place for free camping on a hill, where you have a great view over the City. Then we drove to the Malecon, enjoyed a beer at the beach and went to a bar afterwards. It was already dark when we relaxed a bit and enjoyed beer on a pier. After midnight we went to our campsite. Willi left us, because he had to go to Cabo San Lucas next day.

Next morning we went to the ferry for buying tickets and fix everything. Our new friends helped us translating. It was Tuesday and on Thursday we wanted to leave. Only two days left with Roberto and Daniela. We headed south to Santiego, about 20 km away from Los Barriles, to visit the hot springs Agua Caliente. The rough road to get there was really sandy and we were scared to get stuck another time. Before we had to cross the river we decided to camp right there. We wanted to hike there early next morning and to spend the day at the natural pools.

The Mexican way to drink Tequila (before, during and after a meal) let us sleep longer next morning. About at 11:00 we arrived at the pools of the hot springs. Oh, such a gorgeous place! We enjoyed a refreshing swim and had breakfast right there. At midday we prepared eggs and tortillas at a campfire. We wanted to stay longer, but at late afternoon we had to leave to Los Barriles for finding a campsite that night. Daniela and Roberto usually live in this town, but at low season it’s not easy to find a job and it is too hot there in summer. So they do what they love: Travelling!

Close to a public beach we placed our van and went with all the stuff for barbeque to the beach. There we placed our campfire and enjoyed the last night with our new friends. Next morning we left and headed to La Paz. At Walmart we refilled our food storage and caught the ferry to Mazatlán at 5:00 pm. About 15 hours crossing the Baja overnight. Thinking about all the impressions we had the last weeks, we were looking forward to the main land.
