Trying to find the non touristy spots

In Playa del Carmen we prepared at Walmart for 3-4 days camping and went south to Akumal. We stopped there at a rocky beach and decided to visit the turtle beach the next day. Close to Chemyil, a little village south of Akumal, we found a great spot for camping. A Dutch guy offers places on his territory in the jungle. We found a great spot beside a cenote. We prepared a steak for barbeque and listened to the hundreds of birds and animals around. A place to feel more than comfortable!

Next morning we went to the turtle beach of Akumal. Oh my god, that was touristy! They marked a route with moored buoys for the snorkelers at the coast. There you shall see big turtles under water. A life west is obligatory and for rent you pay plenty of money for it. They also try to sell you a guide (for swimming the round course? Pff …). Marcus and Peppi did snorkeling (without a vest) and had the chance to see some of these great creatures. Hundreds of tourists at a little spot, but getting there was worth it. In the early afternoon we continued to a little cenote close to our campsite.

It wasn’t the biggest one, but very beautiful and free. The guy from the campground recommended us a close beach, which is not so crowded and good for snorkeling. We were amazed when we entered this beautiful beach between Akumal and the Xel-Ha resort. Clearest water and really lonely! You can see the waves breaking about 60-80m before they arrive at the coast. Often this is a sign for a coral reef out there.

Marcus and Peppi did two times a snorkeling trip there. They couldn’t believe what they see so close to the coast. The water is about five meter deep out there and some colorful corals nearly reach the surface. Shoals of fish in the brightest colors, crabs and big stingrays are around there. We knew this is probably the easiest and best snorkeling spot (Coordinates 20.339713, -87.343723) we will ever find. 20 Peso for parking at the Tortuga Marina Sanctuary and no guide, boat and life vest are necessary. And the best: Not crowded!

For dinner we prepared self made burgers and joked to sell our recipe, because at our travels we never had such kind of delicious burger before. Kali had a bit problems with his stomach next morning and so only Marcus and Peppi walked to another cenote, which was about one kilometer away from the campground. Most of the time they were alone at this beautiful area! Gorgeous! Pictures can tell more than words!

Close to our campsite there were two little caves, which you can lighten when it is dark. A hammock chair down there invites for staying. The owner also talked about another cenote on his premises and so we made a little expedition to find it in the late afternoon. At the campfire we prepared delicious spare ribs for dinner and enjoyed the last night at this superb place. This was a location where you can easily stay for two weeks. Maybe there is a next time!
