Heading south on Highway 101 we entered the Red Wood National Park. Oh yes, these big trees are breathtaking. At the visitor center we checked out possible hikes and looked for a campground that day. We were lucky guys to get the last site at the Big Lagoon State Park. Wow! That’s a great place! So we spent plenty of hours hanging around at the Ocean and the Lagoon. We were so happy to enjoy that place with our girlfriends.
The next day we started a five hours hike at the Fern Canyon in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, where they filmed some parts of Jurassic Park. We’ve seen a couple getting there with a Corvette and can’t recommend it when you have to cross three little rivers. This is the reason why you can find plenty of car parts there.
The canyon is really a “Lost World”, not comparable with something we’ve seen before. We crossed the Canyon and continued to the Friendship Ridge, West Ridge and California Coast Trail. Incredible vegetation and wildlife: Canyon all over with ferns and mosses, really big Red Woods (once we stood in a burned one with about five meter width), two waterfalls and plenty of deer. All you need for a day!
Randy and Nina, who we met at that awesome campground by Olympic NP, recommend us a campsite about 15 miles south from the beginning of Highway 1. And when they give you a good hint, it must be great place. On the way at the junction to Highway 1 by Leggett we visited a drive-through Red Wood tree. Very cool, but the tunnel was far too little for our van. J
At the special mile marker on Highway 1 we entered to a really really rough, narrow, step and graveled road. That was the biggest challenge we’ve ever had with our 508erin for eight miles. Nearly impossible without 4WD! But when you arrive at this place, you know that it’s worth it: A lonely clean beach with high cliffs surrounding! There was nothing except a few people, but we felt comfortable and loved this spot. It was the first place with our girlfriends where we decided to stay for two nights.
We wanted to check out another cliché that is not usual in Austria: Visiting a car theatre! So we went to Lakeport, because it was on our way to San Francisco and we booked a motel for one night. We rested in the afternoon and went to the film Transformers at night. Bad movie, but it was fun to watch it in your own car. The show ended at 2:00 am. Tired at next morning we went on and started singing: “When you’re going to San Francisco …”
