The city of thousand opportunities: Los Angeles

Before we entered the city of angels, plenty of people recommended us not to go there. We asked “Why?” It’s a really big city, not very special, some criminal districts, wide spreaded, only a few good spots and the traffic is terrifying. OK, doesn’t sound like an invitation! We had played GTA (Grand Theft Auto) in our childhood, so we know how LA is. 😉 Just kidding! But when you ship a 508erin from Europe to US, of course you also have to hit LA!

We know you can spend more than two weeks in LA and you can’t see everything. Our decision was only the cheap favorites in two days! So we entered LA northwest from Highway 1, parked and walked around at the famous Santa Monica Pier. It was cloudy and not weekend, but the pier was very crowded. It was fun looking at some guys making crazy stuff for money: Fortune and joke tellers, astronauts or just musicians. No limit for creativity!

Afterwards we enjoyed an ice cream at the famous 3rd street and watched the busy guys doing shopping. These poor pigs had to make a decision between Gucci and Prada. We are glad not to have these problems. 😛

Then we went to a motel close city center. Not a first class, but a place to sleep and a free parking lot for our van. We took the metro, placed our wish on a wishing tree in Little Tokyo and walked around in China Town. When the sun set and the roads got empty, we took a metro to city center to enjoy a beer in a typical bar. Pretty nice pub! So we got back to our motel after midnight.

Next day we got plenty of attention riding our van on the Rodeo Drive. A European fire truck between Teslas, Porsches, Mercedes,… ? Not usual! Our van is a Mercedes Benz, but the big difference is the age and the price class. 😉 Maybe it was also the only dirty one … We continued and parked close to the “Beverly Hills Boulevard” and visited the Walk of Fame. It took some time looking at the stars on the massive crowded pavement and surroundings to recognize, there are only tourists, nasty rude Hollywood Tour Guides, homeless and … Scientologists. Of course tourists, but shall it be a place to get converted to another religion?

It was fun walking around, watching the whole crazy stuff and seeing to only star not lying on the ground: The star of Mohammed Ali! The most famous star that time was from Donald Trump. We didn’t know why, but it was the only dirty one. Usually people smile when they get a picture with a star, but not in that case. Hmmm … Think about it!

After a little break in a restaurant we drove to the Hollywood sign as close as possible. It was a pity not to get on top, but we also had a great view of LA. It got dark when we left LA north. Climbing up the hills with our van, the million lights of LA presented us an awesome overlook of the skyline. Close to 10:00 pm we stopped at the Monte Cristo Campground in the Angeles National Forest. With late dinner and some beer we passed the impressions of the day and tried to get prepared for the desert next day.
