Honduras: “Why are you so negative at New Year?”

On the 1st of January we left our place at Rio Cangrejal and decided to go at least a few kilometers. The roads south got worse and so we decided to go back on the main road. In Tela we asked at a hotel for staying overnight at the parking lot. There were only two big cabins at this area and a maid showed us the facilities: A cold outdoor shower and a toilet in a storage room, where a other family had vacation upstairs. The maid asked them, if it would be a problem, using the toilet there. We were wondering, why she had to ask them.

It started raining again and we spent all the time in our van. Then the maid came back and showed us a toilet in the holiday house right next to us. It was much more luxury and of course it was OK for us. It already got dark and we just finished cooking in our van, when the maid came again. She forced us to go and we didn’t know why. It was all time raining and we were just sitting in our van.

Then she told us, there are two different owners of these buildings and the grandma next door called the owner in Miami. This was the reason, why she offered us the other toilet. Then the old witch called the owner again and told him, we shall go, because it’s their vacation and they don’t like camping neighbors. We packed our stuff and got ready to go, when probably the daughter of the witch with her child came along. She asked us, if the boy can look into the van, because they hadn’t seen something like this before.

Peppi confronted her, they are the reason why we have to go and now she ask, if they can inspect our van? Yes, she knows, but it’s not their fault, it was the mistake of the maid. Peppi got outraged and said NO! It’s like settling your shit in front of someone’s door, ringing the doorbell and asking for toilet paper. She asked us: “Why are you so negative at new year? My New Year’s resolution is being nice and friendly to people.” Enough is enough! We went on before something unpredicted would happen.

It was already dark when we followed the friendly maid on her scooter to another hotel about two kilometers away. She was so sorry what happened. The “campsite” was a muddy meadow at the backyard, but it was at least a secured area. Fed up with the day we went to bed and watched a movie. After an hour the made came again and brought us for dinner gallo pinto (rice with beans) and excused the situation again. Such a cute and friendly woman!

In our travels we passed many countries, but in Honduras the gap between poor and rich is biggest. There is no middle class. The majority don’t have cars and lives in slums. On the one hand you see old pickups, which are often used as public transport for more than twenty people. On the other hand you see huge brand new American SUVs of the rich. Where are the politicians to change this system, or are they also just marionettes of the industry?

Next morning it stopped raining for a while and Peppi went to the beach for a swim. But the place didn’t invite to stay longer: Trash all over! When you don’t stay at national parks, hotels or tourist resorts, you see the pure sad life. It reflected the situation like we recognized before. It was time to go …
