At late afternoon we got settled at a little hotel in Alajuela close to the airport. It was not very special, but enough for one night. Peppi went at night to the airport for picking up his girlfriend Kathi. He hadn’t seen her a long time, because her last visit was in San Francisco six months ago. For him it was a great feeling, holding her in the arms again. Both were surprised that everything seems being the same after such a long time without each other.
Back at the hotel we celebrated the arrival of Kathi with a few beers, but everybody was tired and we went to bed early. After breakfast next morning we wanted to visit the volcano Poás. It was raining all the time, even in the dry season. Our 508erin achieved much elevation and right before the top of the volcano, a sign blocked the entrance. In cause of to high activity it was too dangerous that day for visiting Volcano Poás. It was a pity and when they put the sign 20 km before on the road, we would have saved at least one hour going up there. 🙁
It was foggy and raining all the time. We decided to head north to a little hostel at Rio Cuarto. You pass mountains and deep rain forest, many waterfalls and cross plenty of rivers for getting there. The environment is awesome, but you can’t enjoy it with all the rain. At the hostel Orozco we got settled and the nice family invited us for a delicious soup. We were talking about the Costa Rican culture and the opportunities for activities around that area. In general most of the Costa Ricans are friendly, mind opened and helpful. Not comparable with other countries we had been.
Kathi and Peppi used a little rain break and went to the Laguna Cuarto. It was a lovely place and only a few locals were hanging around there doing Sunday afternoon party. The nature is great and many birds are flying around. When the weather is better, it would be a great place for staying more days there. At night we prepared barbeque and went to bed early.
There was a trail to seven waterfalls near, but all the rain didn’t invite us to go next morning. We decided to flee from the fog and bad weather all the time. At late afternoon we arrived again at La Colina, where we stayed three days before. Fernando and his family were happy to see us again and welcomed us nicely. We rented the little cabin with a great view from the terrace and enjoyed the next two days hanging around and hiking in this area.
Then we went to Santa Elena at Monte Verde and stayed one night at a hostel. Jules, an Austrian friend of us, will arrive at night with the bus. Heavy winds and rain all the time let us stay in the town. We just explored a few bars and at night we welcomed our friend Jules. After such a long time we knew much to talk about.
The weather forecast in this area predicted one week bad weather. No reason for staying longer and so we headed to the beach of Tamarindo at the peninsula of Nicoya: Pacific Ocean and good weather all day long!
