Costa Rica: Beach hopping at Peninsula Nicoya

The road to Playa Tamarindo was in a good condition and this is usually a sign for touristy place. We found a campground close to the beach with dorms and a nice communal area. The next two days we enjoyed swimming, relaxing at the beach and delicious, but expensive meals. It was a nice place, but too crowded with tourists. So we decided to go south east.

The road was really bad for two hours, but after two deep river crossings we followed a little pass up to a hill at the Ocean. We were really happy to find such a place close to the Playa Pitahaya. We were swimming at the beach and played with sand. It was much fun, but then Kali lost his glasses in the sea. Shit happens! The current was strong and so we had no chance to find it again. Our mood changed quickly and we returned to our campsite.

Great view all around and only a few locals came to this place for watching this amazing sunset. We collected some coco nuts and made some cocktails. For dinner we prepared delicious barbeque and enjoyed the bright stars around without light pollution. Everybody except Kali … 🙁

It counted probably to the top five campsites, where we had been since our travels. But we were not prepared to stay longer there. At noon we arrived at a beach near San Juanillo. It was an almost rocky coast and only a few spots had a sandy beach. After nearly four hours with swimming, snorkeling and relaxing we continued south. Finally we found a campsite at a turtle sanctuary in Playa Ostional. Gilbert, the owner, said this beach is one of the three best beaches for turtle spotting in world. So we booked a tour for the next morning and looked forward to seeing this spectacle.

Rest of the day we spent some time at the beach with rough waves and many surfers around. At night we prepared barbeque again and had a few beers. Gilbert turned off the lights at 10:00 pm and forced us to go to bed. In this town everybody turns off all lights at latest 9:00 pm. The light irritates the turtles and at other places they don’t come back again to the coast for laying their eggs.

We fixed 5:15 am to break up for the tour, but at 4:30 Gilbert woke us so loud and with so much enthusiasm that we thought it is emergency situation. Did we sleep too long? No, only Gilbert was thrilled much too early in the morning. It was still dark around and with only two red lights we went more or less two kilometers south to the turtle spot. The show was amazing and about twenty turtles were around digging holes and laying their eggs in it. Hundreds of vultures waited for the chance to get some fresh eggs, which weren’t dig too deep. It was an amazing show.

After sunrise at about 6:00 we went back to our campsite and tried to get a bit more sleep. The sun hit the van and the tent directly and so it was maybe good for half an hour. At late morning we continued and headed to the town Nicoya for ordering new glasses for Kali. It takes nine days to get them completed and this meant we got stuck for this time at the peninsula of Nicoya. The area is awesome so it could be worse.

The same day we headed south to Playa Samara. It is also a very touristy place and nearly all hotels and hostels are full, but at the edge of the town we found a nice lonely campground right at the beach. It was our base for the next three days, where we did lots of swimming and making party. One night we went swimming with the snorkel gear and had a great experience with glowing plankton. Every move you do is like an exploding firework. Gorgeous!

The holiday of Kathi came to an end and so Peppi went with her to San José for spending one night there and bringing her to the airport the following day.
