Glacier National Park: Another great story to add …

We left Yellowstone heading north and entered Montana. The weather turned bad and it was raining nearly the whole day. It was probably the best decision to continue our travels, but we were also sad leaving this great National Park. Lets see, what the next days will bring.

Lonely meadows with cows, sometimes horses, few people and crazy suicide chipmunks running across the road: That was the result of a few hundred miles. One time we stopped for late lunch at a little village with a population of about 200 people. It was a strange feeling, when you enter a restaurant and then you have the doorknob in the hand. But we liked the old styled furniture. The food was great and it was pretty cheap. Another good decision! 😉

At night we stayed at a campsite close to the Merry Widow Cave. Good facilities, but nothing to do when it is raining the whole time. The next day we visited the cave. It is a “healing” radon mine. They got the knowledge of an Upper Austrian spa resort in Bad Gastein. We met an old guy in the cave. He is an immigrated Austrian doctor and lived nearly sixty years in the US. This guy went more than twenty times to Bad Gastein in Austria for his healing process. Then he heard about the Merry Widow Mine and since then he travels at least once a year from Rapid City South Dakota to this place. We were deeply impressed when he told us his age: 93 years and he feels good enough to fly his own plane! Maybe this radon reallyworks!

We met a cool 65 year old retired guy called Greg at a campsite in Choteau. He travels with his older wife and they make off-road daytrips with their “Razor ATV”. They also went to church on Sunday morning with this ATV. 😉 He gave us plenty of helpful tips, especially for Mexico (this region is cool, miss that city, …). Next we stopped at the city Browning in the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. We didn’t feel welcome, when we filled up our food storage at an Indian Supermarket. Not very polite employees and everybody in a bad mood …

On the same day we entered the Glacier National Park at the Two Medicine Lake. Gorgeous! Bright clear lake with mountain surrounding! So beautiful! We decided to look for a campsite and do some fishing in the lake. It’s completely free (except two special kinds of trouts)! A few guys gave us baits and so it was quite easy to get six little rainbow trouts within an hour. We grilled them in the evening and that was the best fish we ever had. Orange meat, completely organic, great taste!

The next day we decided to do a hike around the Two Medicine Lake. At breakfast we saw plenty of people making photos just 50 meters away from our van. So we got there and just at the moment a moose came out from the wood with her cub and entered the lake! It seemed to become a good day. We were just hiking one mile, we saw a lynx passing our trail. It hid in the bushes, so we got great pictures of it.  Our watch list of rare animals was nearly completed. So we continued our hike, enjoyed the great landscape and looked up to the mountain cliffs to watch for shy Mountain goats.

We stayed nearly an hour at the beautiful Twin Falls. They merge together at this place. So we crossed bear feed the river and climbed up a few rocks. An awesome place and a nice foot bath! We completed the round trip with about eight miles at 2 pm. There was a boat rental at the eastside of the lake. So we hired two kayaks for an hour and enjoyed the great view to the mountains from the brightest water! When we returned to our campsite, plenty of Mountain Goats were running around, not so shy as we expected. They ate the coals and the ash from the fire places. Its ought to be healthy! Even the old Egypts knew this secret, and also the goats. 😉

On this day it was even easier to catch fish than the day before. A couple visited us at the evening with a few beers and a guy called Markus joined us with a bottle of wine. We invited Markus for dinner, because it was too much for us. So we talked plenty of hours, listened to interesting stories … it got late. That day was probably one of the best, since we were travelling.

The next day it was foggy and rainy. So we went to the west entrance of Glacier on Highway 2, because the Going-to-the-Sun Road was closed until July. It was foggy and raining, so we looked for a place to do overnight parking. A nice guy, who we met at a gas station, showed us a place, where two big rivers merge together. Perfect! The next day we did a six miles hike to the Avalanche Lake. At least five waterfalls, which are fed with glacier water, fell down the cliffs and ran into the lake. A very special view!

Bye bye Glacier! It was great!
